As a type II hair keratin, forms obligate heterodimers with type I hair keratins that assemble into keratin intermediate filaments. Expressed specifically in cuticle-forming cells of the hair shaft during the anagen phase, where it contributes to the formation and structural integrity of the hair cuticle
