Background :LexA is the master repressor of the bacterial SOS response to DNA damage. In the absence of DNA damage, LexA binds to SOS boxes in the promoter regions of SOS genes and represses their transcription. Upon DNA damage, RecA is activated and stimulates the autocatalytic cleavage of LexA, relieving repression and allowing expression of DNA repair genes.
